Touching was born of a desire to ensure that people of different abilities could enjoy art together.
Departing from the colourful shadows characteristic of Changing with Seasons, I used white fabrics of different textures to create an installation tactile in form and intent. My audience was required to use eye masks and take off their shoes before entering the exhibition zone—there, they could climb around on the fabric to trace the shapes of shadows in different seasons.
My original intention was to remove the sensory barrier posed by sight, and thus open to visitors and experience of my art with all its textures, scents, sounds, and whatever else they might find. But different visitors turned out to have very different experiences.
Afterwards, a father who participated with his young son told me that their relationship had never been so close as when they explored the dark together.
