The Tree was inspired by one of the four famous trees that had their roots climbing on a stone wall in Central. These four trees were cut in the trunk one night by the authorities, who claimed that they might pose a threat to pedestrians. The “death” of these trees shocked the city and aroused heated discussion. I thought to present this relationship anew through a narrative around which this installation centred, which reads as follows.

One morning, the Villagers awoke to find a world different from that of yesterday. What had changed?

They saw vines wrapped around a lofty body, the fragrance of hyacinths still wafting through the air, his own body still intact...

It seemed that the sky had become bigger! The Tree that enclosed their little home, larger than all of their lives, had disappeared overnight.

The Villagers searched high and low for someone with an answer. Finally, Triangular Potato offered an explanation.

"Around midnight yesterday, I saw several dark shadows hanging around near the tree.”

Perhaps, the Villagers supposed, somebody had cut down the tree, leaving only its roots for them to find. But this answer did little to assuage their worries. The Villagers were still afraid, and everyone had their own question! Who cut down The Tree, and why? Would they come back? What would happen to their home without the tree? What could they do? Where could they go?

There were too many questions, and too many possibilities. We invite you to come join us in writing their story.
