Seals for Souls was an interactive project born of a growing concern for conversations surrounding abortion in Hong Kong, and the social and personal conditions that The abortion rate in Hong Kong is among the highest in developed countries—each year, over ten thousand legal abortions are conducted in this city.

In times past, Chinese seals were meant for emperors and queens, officials and generals—the upper echelons of society.  It seemed to me that creating a series of seals in response to this reality could be a way to honour a host of voices that would never sound, and contribute to ongoing dialogues regarding abortion.

I offered free workshops for those interested in the project, introducing them to traditional seal carving techniques and aesthetics. Chinese names often carry the hopes parents have for their children.  Participants were invited to consider their hopes for an unborn generation as they designed and engraved these seals, and to discuss the social environment surrounding abortions and unplanned pregnancy in Hong Kong.
